Allied Services’ History

On February 5, 1958, a group of community leaders met with a goal of enhancing services for people with disabilities in the Scranton area.  It was to be an "alliance" of Scranton area providers of services to those with disabilities in order to reduce administrative costs and enhance programming.  On that day, Allied Services was founded.

Allied's first initiative was a vocational center for workers with disabilities.  In the 60s, a rehabilitation hospital was built and residences for adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities.  By the 80s, behavioral health programs were added, a skilled nursing center was built, a new, larger rehab hospital was built in Scranton, and the John Heinz Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine was opened in Wilkes-Barre.  The 90s saw the opening of Allied Terrace assisted living facility and the acquisition of the DePaul School for children with dyslexia.  In 2008, Allied established a pharmacy and formed a partnership with Burnley Employment and Rehabilitation Services.

In between, Allied has also constructed medical office buildings and opened 15 outpatient rehabilitation clinics.  By founding and sponsoring National Rehabilitation Week, Allied has taken a leadership role in promoting the capabilities and unmet needs of people with disabilities throughout the nation.
